Short-Term / Long-Term Missions Opportunity for Ophthalmologists in NIGERIA

Kano Eye Hospital 3

Situated in the Muslim city of Kano, in Nigeria’s far north, ECWA’s Kano Eye Hospital has been meeting the optometry and ophthalmological needs of the over 10 million people of Kano state and throughout the northern Nigeria for over 30 years. With people coming from all over northern Nigeria and Niger for care, the 175-bed hospital with its 10 doctors and some junior registrars is at the forefront of ophthalmological care in northern Nigeria.

To help meet the needs today the hospital is looking for mission-minded Ophthalmologists to partner with Nigerian staff in displaying Christ’s love in this city.

Kano Eye Hospital 2Their trained staff, diagnostic facilities and well-equipped surgery center enables them to provide quality medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders and diseases for thousands of people every year, saving their sight and transforming their lives. Meeting these needs includes:

  • Cataract surgeries (phacoemulsification, small incision cataract surgery, capsular tension ring insertion and scleral fixation surgery),
  • Glaucoma surgeries (trabeculectomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and laser iridotomy), and
  • Retinoblastoma chemotherapy.

With Nigeria’s high youth population, they have established a pediatric ophthalmology unit focusing on pediatric cataract and some pediatric glaucoma surgeries, strabismus surgeries, and amblyopic treatment. To expand their care, they are looking to develop both Vitreoretinal and anterior segment units.

Kano Eye Hospital 1The hospital is seeking missionaries who are passionate to see people’s sight restored both physically and spiritually. There is opportunity to take your skills outside the hospital in outreach activities, as well as teaching, training and developing staff at the hospital.

One other note: Recognizing the need for medical treatment beyond eye care, the hospital also hosts a maternity clinic. In a country where the death of mothers and babies in childbirth is common, this clinic has saved hundreds of lives. A recent expansion has been the opening of a general practice clinic, broadening their response to the need for more holistic health care in an area where many cannot afford it.

Whether you desire to serve long-term or short-term, this opportunity will require you to raise your own support. Housing is available either through the hospital or the mission organization Serving In Mission (SIM).

MSICS Training for Surgeons

voi

GSA logow tagl

There is tremendous need for a very good cataract procedure where phacoemulsification technology is either not available or too expensive to provide to the masses that need surgery. Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) is the perfect surgery for much of the world: it is inexpensive, effective, produces minimal astigmatism, sutureless, safe, relatively quick to perform and is relatively simple to learn with good instruction. If you have an interest in doing medical missions in the future, strongly consider MSICS training. Our friends at Global Sight Alliance and Vision Outreach International would love to assist you!
